A few couplets on Eyes
Dewdrop's recent post inspired me to post a few couplets on eyes, i.e., aa.Nkhe.n. I am writing everything from my memory, so I apologize for any typos. Here are the couplets:
The first two are by Sahir Ludhiyanvi, a noted film lyricist with a socialist, yet romantic, pen:
ye aa.Nkhe.n dekh kar ham saarii duniyaa bhuul jaate hai.n
inhe.n paane kii dhun me har tamannaa bhuul jaate hai.n.
inhe.n paane kii dhun me har tamannaa bhuul jaate hai.n.
--- Lata and Suresh Wadkar (Sahir, Hridayanath)
Not to forget a beautiful one from the movie Dharmaputra:
bhuul sakataa hai bhalaa kaun tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n
ra.ng me Duubii hu_ii nii.nd kii bhaarii aa.Nkhe.n.
ra.ng me Duubii hu_ii nii.nd kii bhaarii aa.Nkhe.n.
--- Mahendra (Sahir, N. Dutta)
This couplet was copied in a different way in songs like ``hamako to jaan se pyaarii hai tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n" and ``is jahaa.N kii nahii.n hai.n tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n; aasmaaN se ye kisane utaarii aa.Nkhe.n."
One gossamer from Gulzar is worth the mention. It firmly propagates the idea that love is between two souls and not between touch and similar physical emotions:
hamane dekhii hai in aa.Nkho.n kii mahakatii khushabuu
--- Lata (Gulzar, Hemant)
One more by Gulzar which talks about the sheer beauty of someone's eyes:
aapakii aa.Nkho.n me kuchh mahake hu_e se raaz hai.n
aapase bhii khuubasuurat aapake andaaz hai.n.
aapase bhii khuubasuurat aapake andaaz hai.n.
--- Lata & Kishore (Gulzar, RD Burman)
And in yet another one, eyes become the house of dreams:
aa.Nkho.n me hamane aapake sapane sajaaye hai.n
bas aap aap aap hii mujhame samaaye hai.n.
bas aap aap aap hii mujhame samaaye hai.n.
--- Lata & Kishore (Gulzar, Khayyaam)
Not to forget the beautiful couplet by Shahryar, which talks about ``mastii'' or lustful intoxication in a dancer's eyes:
in aa.Nkho.n kii mastii ke mastaane hazaaro.n hai.n
is shahar me tum jaise diiwaane hazaaro.n hai.n
ik hamii.n mai ko aa.Nkho.n se pilaate hai.n
kahane ko to duniyaa me.n maiKhaane hazaaro.n hai.n.
is shahar me tum jaise diiwaane hazaaro.n hai.n
ik hamii.n mai ko aa.Nkho.n se pilaate hai.n
kahane ko to duniyaa me.n maiKhaane hazaaro.n hai.n.
--- Asha (Shahryar, Khayyaam)
Shakeel Badayuni, a poet noted for his elegant poems, chipped in with following lines:
aa.Nkh se aa.Nkh milaataa hai ko_ii
dil ko khii.nche liye jaataa hai ko_ii.
dil ko khii.nche liye jaataa hai ko_ii.
--- Lata (Shakeel, Hridayanath)
Javed Akhtar came up with the following stanza in his famos attempt of cross-border harmony attempts with Nusrat Fateh Khan:
aa.Nkhe.n niichii hu_ii to hayaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n uu.Nchii hu_ii to duaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n uTh-kar jhukii to adaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n jhuk-kar uThii to qazaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n jiname.n hai qaid aasmaan-o-zamii.n
naraGisii naraGisii suramayee suramayee
aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n
aa.Nkhe.n uu.Nchii hu_ii to duaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n uTh-kar jhukii to adaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n jhuk-kar uThii to qazaa ban gayee
aa.Nkhe.n jiname.n hai qaid aasmaan-o-zamii.n
naraGisii naraGisii suramayee suramayee
aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n aaf_rii.n
--- NFAK (Javed, NFAK)
Another shaa'ir comes up with a comparison between tears and stars:
kisii kii aa.Nkh ke aa.Nsuu hai.n sitaare na kaho
nazar kaa dhokhaa hai tum inako nazaare na kaho.
nazar kaa dhokhaa hai tum inako nazaare na kaho.
--- Lata (Unknown, Anil Biswas)
To conlcude, I have another exuberant description of beauty:
jhukii sii wo unakii hayaabaar aa.Nkhe.n
wo palako.n ke saaye ghanere ghanere.
wo palako.n ke saaye ghanere ghanere.
--- Rafi (K. M. S. Bedi, Rafi)
Hope you all liked the couplets.
