^^ After the boar-incarnation, i.e., the varaah-avataar, Vishnu or Raam is popularly referred to as Dharaniidhar, i.e., One who lifted earth. In boar-incarnation, Vishnu re-located the earth back to its orbit when She started sinking in the ether or vacuum.

Monologue Series : IV

I gaze around and see hard to understand patterns running on white-like surfaces. I wonder what are they; I cannot recognize anything on the white surfaces. I hear a continuous irritating, but tolerable, buzz coming from one corner. A strange smell tickles my nose, though not discernable, but is likeable. As I see around, I find a colorful object; but it is far from my hands. The more I try to get it, the farther it seems. Oh Lord! Am I supposed to face all these separations from beautiful objects during my whole life? That will be really saddening.

I hear a strange sharp sound, quite different from the buzz coming from other side. Someone walks by me; I smile and shout with a giggle, and she smiles at me too. The smiles fade away and the faces become obscure. Suddenly, a lot of dazzle enters from the corner where sharp sound came. The smiling one walks again by me with a rather ugly thing this time. No no, I certainly don't want it! I look with a rather puzzled face this time, and get a flying soft kiss from the person walking beside me.

I look again at the seven-colored object. Oh my! It looks prettier now, I surely want it this time. I reach out so much and so much; I fail. Yet another jump and attempt for it, and I fall off in air. Oh Lord! What happened? And what did strike me so hard? I start crying due to pain. The smiling woman came running, this time little anxious, and picks me up in her hands. I cry and she consoles; I cry more and she consoles more. I give up and smile. Something moves around my eyes and nothing appears proper to me. There I sit again, where I was. This time the many colored object is in my hands. And I touch it, play with it, and throw it again on ground. I look around for the smiling one who has again disappeared. The buzz from the other corner is fading away.

I feel I need something. Need what, I don't know. I just start crying. Cries again? Yes. I cry harder after a pause. She runs to me again, and says, ``your lunch is ready little one. No need to cry.'' She pats me and lays me down in her lap. I drink something white and sweet, and slowly slumber to sleep.

Krishna-AshtakaM

Krishna-AshtakaM means eight pada submitted to Lord Krishna. There are many poems by this name, however, this post brings one by Adi-Shankaracharya. The chhanda is adorned by the panch-chaamar meter and it has a beautiful use of akaaraant-samaas. Without more tasteless words, here is the supreme nectar from Lotus-feet of Lord.

MEANING

Sing salutations to The only ornation of Vraj, Who destroys every sin (among us), Who is continuous bliss for His devotees, and Who is the dear one of Nanda. I bow to naughty Krishna, Who has beautiful bunch of peacock feathers on head, Who has a sweet sounding flute in hands, and Who is inseparable from God and is full of colorful actions.|| 1 ||

I bow to The lotus-eyed One, Whose beauty slays the pride of Kamdev (Manoj), Who has fulsome lips and beautiful big eyes, Who removed the thoughts of obstacles from cow-rearers (gopa). I bow to head-elephant-like-carefree Krishna, Who lifted a mountain in His lotus like hands, Whose smile and gaze is enticing, and Who slayed the pride of Indra^.|| 2 ||

I bow to Krishna, Who is hard to get, Who has beautiful earrings made of flowers of kadamba-tree, Who has two beautiful cheeks, Who is the only dear One of land of Vraj. I bow to Krishna as cow-rearing-leader, Who is supreme bliss when viewed with Yashoda, Cow-rearers, and Nand. || 3 ||

I bow to the son of Nanda, Whose lotus-feet is always immersed in the maan-sarovar like lake of my mind, Who has beautiful curls falling upon his face. I bow to the delight of Nand, Who is absolver of all defects (in us), Who looks after everyone in this world, and Who is the heart of every Gopa or cow-rearer. || 4 ||

I bow to the heart-stealer, Who relieved earth of heavy weight* (of humans), Who is the support for us to cross the ocean of life and death, and Who is the young son of Yashoda. I bow to the son of Nand, Who has beautiful glancing eyes, Who is always accompanied by bumble-bees^^, and Who appears new to His devotee, everytime, and leaves them mesmerized. || 5 ||

I bow to the dear one of Gopas, Who is the abode of qualities, mercy, and happiness, and does not needs any mercy from anyone, and Who relieved the problems of demi-gods. I bow to cloud-colored beautiful one, Who is a new cowherd rearer and playful, Who is always thinking of new ways to mesmerize the mortals, and Who is wearing yellow lightening like robes. || 6 ||

I bow to Krishna, Who roamed amidst the gardens of Vraj, Who is dear to every cow-rearer in Vraj, Who is the only happiness for heart, and Who has a sun like resplendent face. I bow to Krishna, Who is the leader of everyone in gardens of Vraj, Who is desireless but fulfils desire of everyone, Whose glances are like beautiful enticing arrows, and Who sings mesmerizing tunes over flute. || 7 ||

I bow to The consort of Lakshmi, Who slept on the bed-like-dreams of young gopikas in Vraj, Who swallowed the forest and garden fire inside Vraj to save His fellows, Who is surrounded by divine glow, Who is decorated in all ways, and Who gave moksha to Gajendra, the elephant king**. || 8 ||

O Lord! Whenever or wherever I am born, I shall be immersed in Your beautiful ornate stories. Whomsoever sings the two Krishnashtaka (this one and one more by Shankaracharya), and meditates on it shall be born with Krishna bhakti in every life. || 9 ||


^ Indra sent clouds to flood and damage whole of Vraj and Krishna saved Vraj by lifting the mountain Govardhan. In yet another incident, Indra with army fought with Krishna when Krishna and Satyabhama wanted to take it away from heaven. Seeing the first pada, I presume, the last sentence refers to Govardhan incident.

* Earth gets crowded with time and Lord appears to slay off and provide salvation to numerous humans. This is called as relieving weight of earth.

^^ Krishna appears with ``divya'' or un-natural decoration during His incarnation. Of them, ``Lakshmi-mark'' on chest, ``kaustubh-mani'' in neck, ``tulsi-maala'' in neck, ``blue body,'' etc., are cited many times. Due to non-decaying ``tulsi-maala'' in neck, bumble-bees always flock around it to sip on the divine nectar.

** Gajendra, an elephant, was cursed by Sage Agastya in his human body for neglecting the kingdom for seeking moksha. He was trapped by a crocodile in a river and then Vishnu (Krishna) freed him from the crocodile trap.

A few couplets on Eyes

Dewdrop's recent post inspired me to post a few couplets on eyes, i.e., aa.Nkhe.n. I am writing everything from my memory, so I apologize for any typos. Here are the couplets:

The first two are by Sahir Ludhiyanvi, a noted film lyricist with a socialist, yet romantic, pen:

ye aa.Nkhe.n dekh kar ham saarii duniyaa bhuul jaate hai.n
inhe.n paane kii dhun me har tamannaa bhuul jaate hai.n.

Not to forget a beautiful one from the movie Dharmaputra:

bhuul sakataa hai bhalaa kaun tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n
ra.ng me Duubii hu_ii nii.nd kii bhaarii aa.Nkhe.n.

This couplet was copied in a different way in songs like ``hamako to jaan se pyaarii hai tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n" and ``is jahaa.N kii nahii.n hai.n tumhaarii aa.Nkhe.n; aasmaaN se ye kisane utaarii aa.Nkhe.n."

One gossamer from Gulzar is worth the mention. It firmly propagates the idea that love is between two souls and not between touch and similar physical emotions:

haath se chhuu ke ise rishto.n kaa il_zaam na do
sirf eh_saas hai ise ruuh se mahasuus karo

Shakeel Badayuni, a poet noted for his elegant poems, chipped in with following lines:

Comments on Aazaadii

In "BhagwatPuran" gopiis ask Krishna about the quality of persons who love in return, who love unconditionally, and who envy the persons loving them. These questions came in Gopiis mind during raas-kridaa, when Krishna used to hide to slash away the pride of Gopis that they possess Him. The Gopiis were thinking that even though they love Krishna like crazy, He keeps fooling us and disappears every now and then. Krishna replies the following:

There are some people who don't have duality in mind, i.e., they think everyone as Brahma and hence have an indifferent attitude towards everyone. Such persons are advaita. And the above question does not arises in their context.

However, among others, the person who loves only when he/she gets love is just doing business. It is nothing but selfishness.

Unconditional love is the best form of love, and keeping envy with even those who love you is like doing worst order sin. That leads you nowhere.

Disciplined Dog

Today morning, I was standing at the bus stop. A dog was unleashed, left by his owner at the door of a grocery store. The dog feared separation and wanted to look for his owner inside the store. He moved a few courageous steps towards the door of the store; the automatic door opened. The dog, for the next few minutes, stood at the door peeking inside with a raised neck and curious eyes seeking his owner. He didn't violate the rule of ``no-dogs allowed'' at the store and saved possible embarassment of his owner. The dog reinforced, if not proved, the faithful nature of the pet to humankind.

In conclusion, I only hope his owner learns a little from the pet and leashes him outside entry-of-dog-forbidden places.

Comments on Shab-e-Hijr

In response to a few questions on the comment-section, I am initiating another thread with explanations of various sort. Meaning, as requested by anonymous, will be the last part.

* The ghazal is my own creation. I wrote it in a few sporadic attempts totalling about 40 mins. It may have some errors and I apologize for the same.

* I will like to talk about a few metric siblings of these ghazals:

A few are by Shakeel Badayuni:-

meri zindagi hai zaalim
tere Gam se aashkaaraa
teraa Gam rahe salaamat
mujhe zindagii se pyaaraa

The meter and qawaafee of my Gazal matches with Shakeel's; thus the two are ham_zameen.

Gam-e-aashiqi se kah do
rah e aam tak na pahuNche
mujhe khauf hai ye tohamat
tere naam tak na pahuNche

and

rahaa Gardisho.n me haradam
mere ishq kaa sitaaraa
kabhii Dagmagaayee kashtii

* Finally brief meaning of the ashaar (plural of sher):

1) Your beauty is un-witnessed within the span of my vision; O my moon! this star is craving for your radiance.

2) My grief in solitude increased just like stars appearing one by one on night sky; Tears blossomed in my eyes like flowers in springs.

3) I don't have a hope, I don't have a friend; My goal is out of sight, my support is missing as well.

4) I am craving for death, while my fate is everyday hitting on me; This person is being robbed of every now and then, while wandering destitutely.

5) The springs dawned daily arousing old fond memoirs; Due to intoxication of grief (in such a state), I cried your name with continuous sobbing.

6) Take my life away, but give me the pleasure of your (my beloved's) sight; I am not able to pass even one moment (happily) in solitude.
